Spellings

Exception words are words in which the English spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way. They are not words for which phonics 'doesn't work', but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a rare or unique way.

Have a look at the words on the document below. These are common exception words for years 1 and 2.

Attached is a copy of the Year 3/4 spelling list.

There are many different ways to practice your spellings... take a look at the attachment below for some ideas!

Challenge yourself to learn a few you don't know each week?

In the back of the your child's home learning book there is a list of the 3/4 statutory spellings, or year 2 Common exception words. The words that are highlighted are the words your child knows how to spell correctly. Practice all words regularly but focus mainly on the unhighlighted words! This will be updated every term after testing.
